LED Strip Voltage Drop and Feed Planning

Reviewed October 1, 2026

Plan a longer LED strip run

  1. Check the model

Find the verified maximum single-feed length for the exact strip.

  2. Map power entry

Locate the driver and practical feed points before installation.

  3. Check wire and controls

Include extension-wire drop and controller current limits.

  4. Split the run

Use parallel feeds or additional drivers when the documented limit is exceeded.

Separate product limit from project layout

The published maximum run for an exact strip is only one input. The project also needs driver placement, extension-wire length and gauge, controller limits, feed direction and acceptable brightness variation.

Prepare a feed schedule

Calculate the connected load and send the feed schedule for remote review.

Record every branch and cable route

A strip maximum single-feed length and the cable route from its driver are different limits. Record both before approving the layout. Longer cables, higher current and connection losses can reduce the voltage reaching the strip even when the driver has enough wattage.

Cable drop: a hypothetical planning example

Assume a 24V source, a 4A load, a conductor resistance of 0.01 ohm per foot and a 10 ft one-way cable. The two-wire loop resistance is 2 × 10 × 0.01 = 0.2 ohm. Estimated cable drop is 4 × 0.2 = 0.8V, or about 3.33% of 24V.

This simplified example is not a wire-gauge recommendation or an allowable-drop standard. It excludes connector losses, temperature effects and strip PCB losses. For a real design, use the cable manufacturer resistance data at the relevant temperature.

Choose feed points from model instructions

Record each branch length, documented single-feed limit, driver position, cable length, current, controller limit and service access. Confirm the feed method from the exact strip and driver instructions.

Size the combined strip load, or send a branch and feed schedule for review.
