CADORVEN Lighting Guide
IP20 vs IP65 vs IP67 LED Strip Lights
The code applies to the tested construction
An IP code belongs to the enclosure or product construction that was tested. Cutting the strip, changing a cable entry, adding a connector or using a different end seal can alter the finished assembly. The two digit code does not by itself establish chemical resistance, permanent underwater use or suitability for a regulated location.
Profiles and diffusers have a different job
An aluminium profile can help with mounting, heat management and the appearance of the light line. Its diffuser may also protect the strip from casual contact. Those parts do not automatically make an IP20 strip weatherproof, and they do not transfer a water ingress rating to joints or cable entries.
Describe the installation before choosing the strip
Record whether the location is dry, damp, exposed to splashes, subject to wash down or expected to face temporary immersion. The project notes should also show the connector and end seal method, the location of drivers and controllers, drainage, ventilation and access for maintenance. Local electrical requirements still apply to the completed installation.
Record the installation exposure before selecting an LED strip
For an IP65-versus-IP67 decision, record the actual exposure rather than selecting by the larger number alone. Note whether the strip will face occasional splashes, directed washdown, temporary immersion or standing water, and identify where water can reach cut ends, connectors and cable entries. Confirm the required rating and test conditions for the complete proposed assembly with the applicable product documentation.
Send the strip SKU or required output, mounting location, exposure description, cut lengths, termination method and connector details through Project Support. If any part of the assembly is still undecided, mark it as open for review before a sample or quotation is approved.
For connection checks, use the LED strip connector compatibility guide. A connector’s nominal strip width alone does not establish fit or preserve an ingress rating.
Does an aluminium profile make an IP20 strip weatherproof?
Is every IP67 strip suitable for permanent underwater use?
IEC 60529 defines the enclosure classification. See the IEC publication page, then match the supplier report to the product and finished connection method. For project review, send CADORVEN the exposure and termination details.
